A legend fed by the residents tells the story of a forbidden love between a young farmer and a blue-blooded noblewoman whose romantic encounters were controlled by her authoritarian father. According to this story, one day a nobleman asked for the young woman's hand, and the farmer was heartbroken at the possibility of losing the love of his life. In an act of madness, the peasant decided to take extreme measures. Upon seeing the aristocrat walking along the banks of the Douro, he killed him and then threw him into the river to erase any trace of the crime. Afraid of being discovered and knowing that he would be the number one suspect in the murder, he hid on a small desert island. Some time later, the boy began to devise a plan to kidnap his girlfriend and take her with him to the island. But when the couple crossed the river in a small boat towards that hiding place, a storm formed, and the river swallowed the boat where the two were. It is said that the spirit of the nobleman avenged his death. And so, the name Ilha dos Amores was born.
