For centuries, Lisbon’s downtown has been the beating heart of the city where commerce thrived, power was exercised, and daily life unfolded beneath open skies and palace balconies.
Then, in 1755, catastrophe struck. A devastating earthquake reduced much of the city to rubble. Yet from destruction came reinvention. What followed was one of Europe’s most ambitious urban reconstruction projects — rational, elegant, and ahead of its time.
In the beautifully rebuilt Baixa district, you'll walk through the very spaces where Lisbon rose from the ashes.
Your journey begins at the majestic Praça do Comércio, a grand riverside square framed by harmonious arcaded buildings in refined Neoclassical symmetry. At its centre stands the imposing statue of King José I, gazing proudly toward the Tagus River — the same waters that carried Portugal’s ships across the globe.
Passing beneath the triumphal arch, you continue toward historic Rossio Square, a stage of revolutions, celebrations, and public life since the Middle Ages. Its distinctive wave-patterned pavement seems to ripple like the Atlantic itself, while fountains shimmer and the elegant Column of King Pedro IV rises above the square. There is no better place to understand Lisbon’s resilience than here — in the very streets that transformed tragedy into triumph and reshaped the identity of a capital.
