Iberia

Iberia, legally incorporated as Iberia, is the flag carrier airline of Spain. Iberia was formally founded on June 28, 1927. On December 14, 1927, King Alfonso XIII looked on as Spain´s first commercial air route Madrid-Barcelona- was opened. In the company’s first decade it linked major cities on the Spanish mainland, the Canary Islands, and North Africa. 

Based in Madrid, it operates an international network of services from its main base of Madrid - Barajas Airport. Iberia, with Iberia Regional (operated by an independent carrier Air Nostrum) and with Iberia Express, is a part of International Airlines Group. In addition to transporting passengers and freight, Iberia Group carries out related activities, such as aircraft maintenance, handling in airports, IT systems and in-flight catering. Iberia becam a member of the oneworld Alliance since 1999. The leading carrier between Europe and Latin America, its Madrid hub serves around 135 destinations in 47 countries throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. 

 

Iberia's slogan is "More than just flying".

 

29 November 2010, British Airways and Iberia had signed an agreement to merge, making the combined operation the third largest commercial airline in the world by revenue. The newly merged company, known as International Airlines Group (IAG), was established in January 2011, although both airlines continue to operate under their respective brands.

 

IAG combines leading airlines in the UK, Spain and Ireland, operating a fleet of over 533 aircraft.

 

2020 saw the continued replacement of the IAG fleet with new generation aircraft. A total of 34 aircraft were delivered in 2020, including A350s, B787s and A320neo family aircraft. The new aircraft are up to 20% more fuel efficient than the aircraft they replace.

2020 also saw the early retirement of the B747 fleet at British Airways and the A340 fleet at Iberia due to the effects of the pandemic. A number of other older generation aircraft were also retired earlier than planned.

Fleet modernisation will continue in coming years with further deliveries of 64 Airbus A320neo series aircraft, 26 Airbus A350s, 10 Boeing 787s and 18 Boeing 777-9 aircraft.

On its Airbus A330/300, Iberia offers Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins.

Iberia holds 4-star Airline status from Skytrax for the quality of its airport and onboard products and staff service. Product rating includes seats, amenities, food & beverages, IFE, cleanliness etc, and service rating is for both cabin staff and ground staff.
