Scandinavian Airlines System, or SAS (hereafter SAS), as it is more casually known, is the national flag carrier for Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Part of the SAS Group and headquartered at the SAS Frösundavik Office Building in Solna (Sweden).
SAS operates 134 aircraft, connecting to 109 destinations around the world. SAS was a founding member of one of the major airline alliances, Star Alliance. On 31 August 2024, SAS discontinued its Star Alliance membership and joined SkyTeam the following day.
SAS announced 15 new routes from Copenhagen as part of its extensive summer 2025 expansion. The new destinations include Seattle, Krakow, Madrid, Budapest, Lyon, Valencia, Malta, Bucharest, Milan Linate, Seville, Turku, Billund, Kristiansand, Harstad/Narvik, and Bodø.
The airline was founded in 1946 as a consortium to pool the transatlantic operations of Swedish airline Svensk Intercontinental Lufttrafik, Norway's Det Norske Luftfartselskap and Det Danske Luftfartselskab of Denmark. The new airline’s first intercontinental commercial flight, between Stockholm and New York, took place that same year. The three individual carriers handed over all operations to SAS by 1951. On 27 June 2018, the Norwegian government announced that it had sold all its shares in SAS.
SAS focuses on people who travel frequently to, from and within Scandinavia. The airline's main hub is at Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the second-largest hub and Oslo Airport, Gardermoen is the third major hub of SAS. Minor hubs also exist at Bergen Airport, Flesland, Göteborg Landvetter Airport, Stavanger Airport, Sola, and Trondheim Airport, Værnes. SAS Cargo is an independent, wholly-owned subsidiary of Scandinavian Airlines and its main office is at Copenhagen Airport.
The SAS and its motto, "Who Dares Wins", was born early in World War II, when a British army officer, David Stirling, came up with the idea of a highly trained special force that might wreak havoc on enemy supply lines, bases and morale.
SAS continues to bring in new and fuel-efficient aircraft and has one of Europe’s most modern fleets. The new carriers have 15–30% lower fuel consumption, compared with the aircraft they replace. The new aircraft gives travellers a more pleasant, comfortable and sustainable way of travelling.
The SAS fleet consists of Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Airbus A320neo, Airbus A321, Airbus A330, Airbus A350, and Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft. SAS also wet leases Airbus A320neo, ATR 72, and Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft.
