Aerolineas Argentinas was founded in 1950 by a decree of President Juan Domingo Perón, through the union of four airlines (Aeroposta, A.L.F.A., FAMA and Z.O.N.D.A.). At this time, Argentina did not yet have any large airports, so the government of Juan Domingo Perón built the Ezeiza International Airport to meet that need. Key to the growth of Aerolineas were the names of Alfonso Aliaga García and Dirk Wessel Van Layden, who had been a pilot for the French airline Aéropostale and had great influence in improving the quality of flights.
In December 1951, after only one year of operations, the Inter-American Press Association named it the best airline company in the world, for its efficient organization and the quality of its services.
