Georgia gently rewards the restless heart that dares to wander, for every hidden corner whispers a secret and every region guards a landmark unlike any other. From ancient cathedrals on hilltops to cave cities carved into cliffs, from glacier-fed peaks to vineyard valleys, these are the sights that belong on every Georgian itinerary.
Tbilisi Old Town
A maze of balconied houses, sulphur bathhouses, and narrow lanes climbing toward Narikala Fortress. By night, the Mtkvari River reflects the glow of the fortress walls above.
Best explored on foot, with a stop at the Abanotubani baths.
Mtskheta: Jvari and Svetitskhoveli
A UNESCO town just outside Tbilisi. Jvari Monastery crowns a hilltop where two rivers meet, while Svetitskhoveli Cathedral below holds centuries of royal history within its walls.
A short drive from Tbilisi, ideal for a half-day trip.
Gergeti Trinity Church, Kazbegi
A fourteenth-century church standing alone on a hilltop above Stepantsminda, framed by the snow-streaked peak of Mount Kazbek. Reaching it takes a steep climb or a 4x4 ride. The hike takes around two hours each way; pack warm layers.
Ushguli, Svaneti
One of Europe's highest permanently inhabited villages, where stone watchtowers rise above traditional homes amid some of the Caucasus's highest peaks. A true journey back in time.
Reachable via a rugged road from Mestia, best from June to September.
Uplistsikhe Cave Town
A rocky ridge above the Mtkvari River conceals a settlement of cave dwellings, halls, and pagan temples dating to the Early Iron Age, layered with early Christian churches. Located near Gori, easily paired with the city's museums.
Vardzia Cave Monastery
A cliffside in Samtskhe-Javakheti hides an entire monastery hewn from rock, with hundreds of rooms, churches, and surviving frescoes, plus sweeping views over the Mtkvari Valley.
Best visited as part of a day trip through the region.
David Gareja Monastery Complex
A sprawling complex of cave monasteries carved into golden cliffs near the Azerbaijan border, where faded frescoes meet a dry, rolling, semi-desert landscape unlike anywhere else in Georgia.
A half-day trip from Tbilisi; bring sun protection.
Sighnaghi & the Kakheti Wine Region
Georgia's wine heartland, anchored by the hilltop town of Sighnaghi and its twenty-three-tower fortress wall, surrounded by vineyards practising the ancient qvevri tradition. Pair with Alaverdi Cathedral.
Wine tastings and cellar visits are easily arranged throughout.
Batumi and the Black Sea Coast
Palm-lined boulevards meet a striking modern skyline on Georgia's subtropical coast. The Batumi Botanical Garden climbs the hills above, while the seafront comes alive each evening. A relaxed contrast to the mountain regions, ideal for a coastal stay.
In Magelline's view, Georgia's sights are chapters in a single story: cave monasteries carved by monks, watchtowers built by mountain communities, wine cellars in Kakheti, and golden evenings on Batumi's shore. To see Georgia is to move between ancient stone and modern boulevards, between desert cliffs and snow-capped peaks, always with more stories waiting to be found.
