Blue is used as the colour of the sky. It is not only because the company’s planes fly in the sky, but also because the sky symbolizes the pinnacle of professional achievement. Red is the colour of the flame, as well as the symbol of leadership.

As of December 2020, Delta operated a fleet of 750 aircraft manufactured by Airbus and Boeing. Delta operates the largest Boeing 717, Boeing 757, and Boeing 767 fleets in the world, and the largest Airbus A330 fleet of any US airline. Before its 2008 merger with Northwest Airlines, Delta's fleet was made up of solely Boeing and McDonnell Douglas aircraft. Airbus aircraft from Northwest joined the fleet after the merger, and more have since been added.
As of September 2024, Delta Air Lines operated a fleet of 991 aircraft with an additional 14 aircraft planned or on order: all of which are either Boeing or Airbus. Delta was founded in 1925 as Huff Daland Dusters and became Delta in 1928. Delta contributed to the war effort in 1942. Modified 1,000+ aircraft, over-hauls engines/instruments, and trained Army pilots and mechanics.
In 2010, Delta announced the largest product upgrade in a decade with plans to invest more than $2 billion through 2013 to improve the customer experience, including installing new full-flat beds and personal, in-seat video on all widebody aircraft; adding more First Class cabins to Delta Connection regional jets; renovating and adding new Delta Sky Clubs; and adding more First Class seats on domestic mainline flights. Completes integration of Northwest Airlines' Airport and Reservations systems. Receives approval to begin flights at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. Announces plans for a $1.2 billion renovation and expansion of facilities at New York-JFK.
Delta acquired a 49 per cent stake in U.K. airline Virgin Atlantic in 2013, a partnership that increased Delta's access to the important London and trans-Atlantic markets.
In 2015, Delta introduced five differentiated on-board products, enhancing customer options: Delta One, First Class, Delta Comfort+, Main Cabin and Basic Economy. Purchases a 3.5% stake in China Eastern, expanding the airline’s presence and customer choice in Asia’s largest market. Introduces Delta Studio, a world-class in-flight entertainment service.
Delta reports a company record adjusted pre-tax income of $6.1 billion in 2017. Delta ranks No. 63 and is the only airline on Fortune's Best Companies To Work For list, based on employee ratings of workplace culture. Invests 49% in Aeromexico, embarking on a historic transborder partnership. Takes delivery of the first A350, the fleet's new international flagship aircraft.
Delta launched a joint venture partnership with Korean Air with a hub in Seoul in 2018. Rolls out new Zac Posen-designed uniforms for more than 60,000 employees, distinguished by signature Passport Plum colour and influenced by years of employee feedback and input. Launches daily nonstop service between Atlanta and Shanghai. Inducts into its fleet North America's first Airbus A220, a sleek and sustainable aircraft serving U.S. routes.
