Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) is the designated national carrier of the Kingdom of Thailand, trading as THAI. More than half of its shares are owned by the Ministry of Finance, and the company is under the administration of the Ministry of Transport. The company was established by the government in 1960 as a joint venture between the now-defunct domestic carrier Thai Airways and Scandinavian Airlines System. SAS provided technical and marketing expertise but sold all its holdings to the Thai government in 1977. The company merged with Thai Airways in 1998.
THAI primarily operates from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and its secondary hub at Phuket International Airport (HKT), the airline and its subsidiaries fly to over 101 destinations in 37 countries, using a fleet of 95 aircraft, operates an average of 1,095 roundtrip flights per week on domestic, and regional and intercontinental routes that consist of wide-body aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus, while the subsidiary Thai Smile operates narrow body aircraft. Thai's route network is dominated by flights to Europe, East Asia, and South/Southwest Asia, though the airline serves five cities in Oceania. Thai was the first Asia-Pacific airline to serve Heathrow Airport. Among Asia-Pacific carriers, the company has one of the largest passenger operations in Europe.
Most of its board members have ties to the government or the Air Force.

The Thai Airways International logo was developed by Walter Landor Associates and featured a purple, magenta, and gold “jumper,” which was based on the country’s traditional imagery, including its gold temples, tropical orchids, and luxurious silk.
THAI is one of the five founding airlines of the Star Alliance, the world's largest airline partnership. It also runs Thai Smile Airways, a wholly owned low-cost carrier, and holds about 40% stake in Nok Air, the country's second-largest budget airline. The company launched a regional carrier under the name Thai Smile in the middle of 2012 using new Airbus A320 aircraft.
