AirAsia X is a mid-range low-cost airline operating primarily in the Asia-Pacific region. Established in 2006 as Fly Asian Express ("FAX"), the company initially serviced the rural areas of Sarawak and Sabah with turboprop aircraft before undergoing a comprehensive rebranding in September 2007, followed by the inaugural AirAsia X flight to Australia in November 2007.
Today, AirAsia X serves 29 destinations across Asia (Bali, Sapporo, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Busan, Jeju, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Xi’an, Beijing, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai, Chongqing, Wuhan, Maldives, New Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Kathmandu), Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the Gold Coast) New Zealand (Auckland), the Middle East (Jeddah and Medina) and the United States of America (Hawaii) and operates out of three hubs: Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Denpasar, Bali. AirAsia X is the first low-cost airline in ASEAN to receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate into the USA.
As of July 2025, AirAsia X maintains a core fleet of 19 A330-300 aircraft. AirAsia X offers two travel classes: Economy and Business.
Economy Class: Baggage allowance on board is unrestricted but must be paid for. Comfort Kits, which include a blanket, inflatable pillow, and eye mask, can be purchased on board. Meals, snacks, and beverages are available for purchase on all flights; pre-orders can be made online for a 15% discount. For a fee, tablets with movies and TV shows can be rented, although this service is not available on flights to New Zealand, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Bali, or Male.
Economy Class seats offer a pitch of 31 to 32 inches with standard recline. Pre-selection of preferred seats is available for a fee. Children under 12 years are not permitted in a quiet zone located in rows 7 to 14, and these seats can be reserved for an additional fee. There is an extra seat in each row, resulting in 9-abreast seating, and the seats are noted as narrow.
Passengers are advised that there is no forwarding of baggage from one sector to another. Therefore, they must allow enough time between flights to collect bags and re-check in for the next flight, going through immigration if arriving on an international sector. Fly Thru tickets are available for purchase, allowing passengers arriving at Kuala Lumpur to bypass immigration and transfer checked baggage to their final destination. Explicit advice is given to pre-purchase checked baggage, in-flight upgrades, meals, and entertainment when booking to avoid disappointment and higher charges at the airport or on board.
Business Class: On board, a pillow and a quilt are provided. Meals and beverages are also provided. Tablets show movies and TV shows, though the selection is not extensive. A baggage allowance of 25kg is complimentary; additional baggage must be paid for. Seats offer a pitch of 60 inches with a 20-inch width, transforming into an angled lie-flat bed with in-seat power.
Similar to Economy Class, Fly Thru tickets are available for purchase, allowing passengers arriving at Kuala Lumpur to bypass immigration and transfer checked baggage to their final destination. There is no forwarding of baggage from one sector to another, so passengers must allow sufficient time between flights to collect bags and re-check in for their next flight, including going through immigration if arriving on an international sector.
