Ethiopian Airlines, formerly Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL) and often referred to as simply Ethiopian, is Ethiopia's flag carrier. The company is wholly owned by the country's government. Ethiopian Airlines is Africa's largest airline in terms of passengers carried, destinations served, fleet size, and revenue. It commands a lion's share of the pan African network including the daily and double daily east-west flight across the continent. The airline is headquartered on the grounds of Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa where it also maintains its hub from where it flies to over 100 international and 21 domestic destinations operating the newest and youngest fleet. The airline has secondary hubs in Togo and Malawi.

Ethiopian Airlines' Business Class is named Cloud Nine. Passengers travelling in this class are provided with onboard amenities, sleeper seats and a wide variety of reading material.
 

A variety of meals ranging from light snacks to hot dishes— and amenities are provided to passengers flying on Economy Class, both depending upon the length of the flight.

 

Ethiopian Airlines operates the youngest fleet in Africa. Today, Ethiopian Airlines commercial fleet comprising 130 Operating + on Ordered 41 aircraft.

 

Ethiopian Airlines was founded on 21 December 1945 and commenced operations on 8 April 1946 and the first scheduled flight took place to Cairo via Asmara in Douglas C-47 Skytrain. During the late 1940s, the route network was extended to Nairobi, Port Sudan and Bombay. Charter flights were also flown to Jeddah during the Hajj season, carrying pilgrims to Makkah. 

 

In 2007, Ethiopian has achieved two awards by African Aviation Journal and the African/Times USA. The prestigious award by the African Aviation Journal was in recognition of its excellent financial performance, passenger growth, route network expansion, fleet modernization, in-flight service and overall customer care.

 

In the same year, Ethiopian also secured the IATA-IOSA registration certificate as a result of "the Airline’s fundamental commitment to provide safe and reliable air transport services for passengers and cargo".


In 2008, Ethiopian entered into a codeshare agreement with Lufthansa which has put Ethiopian in a position to offer daily flights to its customers from its hub Addis Ababa to Lufthansa’s hub in Frankfurt with convenient onward flight connections to many other destinations around the world. During this period Ethiopian also entered into code-sharing agreements with other airlines including Brussels Airlines.


In 2014, Ethiopian opened a second cargo hub in Africa based in Lomé, Togo, in partnership with ASKY airlines.

 

In 2019, Ethiopian and Hibret Bank have launched the first Co-branded debit card tailored to provide Ethiopian Sheba Miles members with bonus miles for their spending using the debit card.

 

Ethiopian inaugurated state-of-the-art passenger terminal and its Skylight Hotel on 27 January 2019 in the presence of FDRE Prime Minister H.E. Dr Abiy Ahmed, African Union Chairperson H.E. Mr Moussa Faki, Ministers, high-level government officials, Ethiopian Airlines Board Members, Group CEO Ethiopian Airlines Mr Tewolde GebreMariam, Executive Management Members and invited guests. 


Ethiopian Airlines is Certified as a 4-Star Airline by Skytrax for the quality of its airport and onboard products and staff service. Product rating includes seats, amenities, food & beverages, IFE, cleanliness etc, and service rating is for both cabin staff and ground staff.
