Shirak Airport in Gyumri is a local airport that has been in operation since 1961. It is the second most significant airport in Armenia based on its metrics. The airport primarily serves flights to Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Yekaterinburg, and Krasnodar. Originally intended for small passenger flows, it can simultaneously accommodate around 300 arriving passengers.
The airport is located 5 km from Gyumri, Armenia's second-largest city, and 120 km from Yerevan. At the end of the 1970s, a new terminal building and runway were constructed based on the design by architects Gurgen Mushegian, Ruben Hasratyan, and Levon Kristaporyan, and were put into operation in 1982.
In 2007, the runway (with a length of 3220 meters and a width of 45 meters) was completely renovated with funds from the "Armenia International Airports" company. A new IDMAN signalling system of Finnish manufacture was installed, local repairs were carried out in the passenger terminal, and the airport was equipped with specialized ground service equipment.
In the same year, the General Department of Civil Aviation of Armenia awarded Shirak Airport the status of a Category I ICAO airport.
In 2021, the runway at Shirak Airport underwent another major renovation. That same year, a new arrivals hall was also put into operation.
