Salzburg Airport is Austria’s second-largest regional airport. The airport is named after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and is located 2 km from the Austrian-German border. The airport can easily be reached thanks to excellent connections to the public transport system and its motorway exit. It serves Salzburg as well as a gateway to Austria's numerous extensive ski areas, including the Ski Amadé region, the largest network of linked ski resorts in Europe. Salzburg Airport is the perfect starting point to continue your journey to the surrounding summer and winter holiday resorts.
The Airport can be used by aircraft of all sizes up to the B747-400. Improvements according to CAT II-III (intensification of centre-line lighting, improvement of approach lighting and installation of touchdown/zone lights) ensure maximum safety, even in bad weather conditions.
In 1926, the Salzburg Municipal Airfield was opened nearly at the same site where the airport stands today. Germany’s Lufthansa was the first airline to use the airport, linking Salzburg with Munich via Reichenhall.
Salzburg became more attractive for scheduled and charter services with its 2,850 meters of runway and CAT III low-visibility operations.
The number of non-stop destinations serviced from Salzburg has changed dramatically since 2001, when the first low-cost carrier Ryanair started flights to the City of Mozart. More low-cost airlines from the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia followed, bringing in millions of passengers each year.
The airport became the first in Europe to operate a hybrid terminal building serving the dual purpose of charter flight handling during winter and use as an events hall in summer.
In March 2014, a new control tower was completed, one of Europe's most modern. The 53-metre-high structure is visible from far and wide, becoming a new landmark for both the airport and the city.
Salzburg Airport consists of two passenger terminals:
Terminal 1 is the main building, featuring 26 check-in desks, several service counters, some shops and restaurants and a visitor's terrace. The airside area consists of 10 boarding gates that can be used for Schengen and non-Schengen destinations. As there are no jet bridges, walk- and bus-boarding is used. There is a business lounge operated by Salzburg Airport.
The Amadeus Terminal 2 is much smaller, featuring nine additional check-in counters and four boarding gates, as well as a designated area to check in skiing equipment. It has limited passenger facilities due to its use for seasonal peak-time traffic. Terminal 2 at Salzburg Airport is the ideal location for events of all kinds. It is Europe's first and only multi-functionally useable airport terminal, which is also presented as a trendy events location of a special kind, used in the months from April to December. You dine between the check-in counters and the security control and enjoy the rare view of an aircraft parked in front of you. The magnificent infrastructure with numerous parking spaces and hotels in the near vicinity make the terminal a preferred events location.
In July 2015, the new business lounge (80 m²) was opened at the airport. Business Class passengers and eligible status customers from British Airways, Eurowings, Flydubai, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines and as well as Priority Pass members have free entry to the Business Lounge. The price for a traveller is EUR 42 including VAT, subject to availability, available at the Check-in.
